About the Warrior Welcome Home research project

Why have I been invited to participate?

You have been invited to register your interest as a participant in the Warrior Welcome Home research project (project) because you have been a participant in at least one Warrior Welcome Home retreat (retreat).

What is the project about?

The project is a phenomenological case study of soul repair.
It is phenomenological in that we want to understand as much as possible how the retreat is experienced by participants from their perspective.
As a case study it is limited specifically to the Warrior Welcome Home retreat program and not seeking to understand other similar programs that might also promote soul repair.
What we mean by soul repair is the promotion of spiritual health in response to spiritual (i.e. non-physical, non-psychological) wounds that you might have suffered, especially as a result of military service.

What does participation involve?

Participation would involve a recorded interview for 30-60 minutes either in-person or online before the end of October. There will also be opportunities to provide and receive feedback about the results as the project progresses.

Are there any consequences for not participating?

No! Your participation would be completely voluntary and there will be no professional or other consequences if you decline to consent.

Are there benefits to participating?

Yes! Your participation is meant to provide you with an opportunity to reflect on your own spiritual health. It also will help the researchers understand the experience of soul repair better, in order to inform improvements to the Warrior Welcome Home retreat program. Finally, the research project aims promote the importance of spiritual health to other healthcare professionals, defence and in the wider community so that we can better care for veterans and others with spiritual injuries.

Who will conduct the interviews?

The interviews will be conducted by Cameron West and Darren Cronshaw. The results will also be discussed with Rob Sutherland. To read more about the team, go to research.warriorwelcomehome.org/team.

Who will know the results of the project?

The research project will be submitted by Cameron West for academic assessment. The team will also seek to submit the project results for publication in a relevant journal.

Has this project been approved by anyone?

Yes. The project has been approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the Sydney College of Divinity which is the administering institution. It was also considered by the Defence & Department of Veterans Affairs Human Research Ethics Committee.
It has received command approval and organisational support within defence.
The project is being supported by Defence Anglicans with funding from Service Persons Anglican Help Society (SPAHS).
